TIPS FOR SUBTITLING

  • Always check if the subject has already been translated into the target languages, this might mean there are fixed ways to spell product names, terminologies etc. If possible, please furnish us a glossary list of these, so we can instruct our translators accordingly.
  • Make sure the video you submit to us is the final version, as all of the translated content and timings will have to be redone at an extra cost if there is any changes after the project starts.
  • It is always best to transcribe the video with time-codes in the original language first and only then translate, so only one set of time-coding needs to be done. If not, we have to time-code each language individually which means extra costs and longer turnarounds.
  • If you’re planning on shooting raw footage in a foreign language you don't understand and editing it later, please ask your guide or interpreter if they can give you a written transcript of everything that was recorded with time-codes.

SUBTITLES STYLES

These subtitles were ‘burnt on’ to the video (open captions) and due to the nature of the video we use a transparent band behind the text for optimum readability. There are several styles of subtitles we can produce. We can advise you on the best option for your video and even provide samples for you to choose from. We also offer samples of fonts to choose from if required. Subtitles usually have a character limit of around 44 characters and 2 lines per subtitle. In order to get this right, the translation process has to be carried out correctly. Hence, it's critical to engage our experienced translators who are familiar with the settings of subtitles translation. Translators who are not experienced will end up giving you very long translations which cannot be subtitled properly.

BURNT ON SUBTITLES (OPEN CAPTIONS) vs CLOSED CAPTIONS

One method of subtitling is called ‘burnt on’ subtitles, which means they cannot be turned on or off and are always visible. These are also called ‘open’ captions and they are part of the video file itself. Using this method means that multiple languages cannot be shown using the same file, therefore it is necessary to produce multiple versions of the video with the different languages, these can be selected by the user, for example by clicking on different links on a web page.

Closed captions are the opposite of open captions are found on DVD’s etc. These can be switched on and off through the selection menu created in the authoring process. If you have limited budget to work within, this method is highly recommended.

SRT SUBTITLES TRANSLATION

For example, in the case of subtitle translation, we would use a professional audiovisual translator who will create translated subtitles in the target language directly from the video in the source language. The subtitle translator would create SRT files that can then be used to create burnt-on Malay subtitles. All SRT files are time coded documents which can be imported into our subtitling software which then puts the correct subtitle with the correct time sequence. After that, we just need to edit and optimize the visual aspect of the video.

Using TRANSLIFE’s translation services for subtitling means quality and timing can be controlled and secured throughout the project, ensuring that your videos are able to be published on time.

We also provide subtitling services for translation agencies in Malaysia and are happy to work with their translations. As some languages must use specific fonts in order to work with the subtitling software, we can consult with you about your needs and advise you of all of your options.
