PROCESS OF AUDIO / VIDEO TRANSLATION

Step 1: Transcription Services

Transcription is the first step of the progress. We will take the original video, and create an electronic version of the spoken elements with the captions. Usually this require to have Timecode added, it is to create a specific time reference to insert the new voice-over segment or add the subtitle or caption which can appear at the same time.

Step 2: Translation Services

Afterwards, we will start translating the contents. We have to consider the timing factor, hence the process cannot be a straight translation of the written Transcription. Firstly, the certified translator has to know whether the translation is for voice-over or for subtitles, as both outcome will be very different. For voice-over, the translator requires to ensure the translated script will still fit within the time constraints of the original video. This mean that the translators will shorten some sentences to fit the time constraints.

On the other hand, translation for subtitles means that the script has to be compressed which allow the new text fits in one or two lines on the screen. This process is very important and requires translators with great experiences to handle it. If a translator who doesn’t have great experiences in these matters will lead to an inferior product, or can waste a lot of production time and budget or both. 

Step 3: Subtitling, Captioning, Voiceover & Dubbing Services

Captions are a transcription of dialogues, while subtitles are a translation. Even Netflix, a streaming company with some of the highest subtitles and closed captioning standards, groups them both under a heading of subtitles. This can be confusing for someone trying to understand the difference between subtitles vs. captions. 

Voice-over: the content (or a summarized version of it) is recorded over the original audio track, which can be heard in the background, using a single voice. This method is most commonly used for documentaries, training materials or e-learning, and news broadcasts.

Dubbing: the content is recorded by a cast of professional voice actors and the original audio track is replaced or mixed with the relevant dubbed version. In this method, the word choice is paramount because the translated content must be synchronised with the lips movement of the actors on screen (lip sync). This method is mostly used for films and TV shows, especially those for children.
